What it asks

Five phases, in the order Course 03 teaches them.

Each phase prepares the next: the foundation before the learning, the plan before the account, the account before the first purchase.

01

Personal foundation

Whether your finances can carry an investment: a reserve, debts mapped, a written goal, a monthly amount and your risk tolerance.

Personal foundation

Whether your finances can carry an investment before any money goes in.

Without one, an unexpected bill can mean selling investments at whatever price the market offers that day. Course 01 shows how a reserve is sized.

Interest on high-interest debt can be more each year than an investment returns. The Universal Debt Payoff Calculator dates a payoff plan.

The time horizon sets how much short-term movement a plan can absorb.

A fixed monthly amount spreads purchases over time.

A written response is a decision made before a fall, not during one. Course 03, Module 07 includes a structured risk-tolerance assessment.

Phase 2 of 5 · 0 of 5 ticked

Learn and profile

What you could own, and how to read the information behind it.

Each works differently and carries different risks. Course 03 covers one per module.

Exchanges differ in liquidity, fees and settlement times.

Earnings per share, the price-to-earnings ratio, dividend yield, debt-to-equity and return on equity. The Five-Number Company Analyser calculates them.

Fund fees are charged every year, whatever the fund returns.

Audited filings and official fund factsheets are the primary sources; commentary comes second.

Phase 3 of 5 · 0 of 5 ticked

Build the portfolio plan

How your money is spread, decided before anything is bought.

The split between asset classes sets the overall shape of a portfolio’s risk. Course 03 works three illustrative models; they are examples, not recommendations.

Different asset classes tend to respond differently to the same events.

A limit keeps one company’s results from setting the result of the whole portfolio.

Smaller markets can be concentrated in a few sectors. The Portfolio Diversification Analyser shows a portfolio’s spread.

A written plan is the reference every later decision is checked against.

Phase 4 of 5 · 0 of 5 ticked

Open your account

Where your investments are held, on terms you understand.

The licence sets which rules and protections apply to the account.

Small percentages compound over years of regular investing.

Access decides whether your written plan can be carried out on that platform.

It shows how client holdings are kept separate from the broker’s own money.

Verification can take several days.

Phase complete when: your account is open, verified and funded.Learn it in: Course 03, Module 09

Phase 5 of 5 · 0 of 5 ticked

Invest and maintain

The plan in action, and kept on track.

The first purchase sets the pattern every later one is compared with.

Automatic contributions keep the plan going in busy months.

They are used in reviews and in tax returns.

A fixed date keeps reviews on a schedule rather than set off by the news.

Rebalancing brings a portfolio back to the allocation in its plan.

Phase complete when: all five points are in place; from then on, the review date sets the rhythm.Learn it in: Course 03, Module 10 · Course 08

Questions

About the tool.

Is the checklist free?

Yes. The checklist is free.

Are my ticks saved?

No. They stay in your browser while the page is open and are cleared when it closes. Print or save as PDF keeps a copy.

Does it work for any exchange?

Yes. The points apply to any exchange and any market; where rules differ by country, the point asks what applies to you.

Does the checklist recommend an investment or a broker?

No. It names no investment, broker or allocation. It lists the preparation steps in the order Course 03 teaches them.

Why are the phases in this order?

Each phase prepares the next: a reserve and a plan come before an account, and the account before a first purchase. The order is the one Course 03 follows.

Is the result financial advice?

No. The checklist counts what you tick, for financial education. Decisions about your money stay with you, made with a licensed professional where one is needed.
